Accident/DUI

DATE & TIME: Thursday, April 4, 2019 at approximately 1715 hours

LOCATION: South 4th ST. Virginia, NE 68458

On 04/04/19 at approximately 5:15 P.M., Gage County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle parked near the Virginia, NE COOP, a male leaning against the vehicle and then falling to the ground. Citizens witnessed the male fall and went to his aid calling 911. The male stated he was ok and entered his vehicle. He then drove southbound on 4th St at what witnesses guessed to be approximately 50 to 55 mph. This roadway, 4th St., comes to a dead end on the south edge of Virginia. The vehicle continued south on 4th St. and ignored that the road came to a dead end. The vehicle continued and struck a rock pile, became airborne and came to rest in a brush pile of tree limbs.

The accident investigation found that the driver, William Thompson, 78 years of age of Stromsburg, NE, was the driver and only occupant. Thompson was transported to the Beatrice Community Hospital to be assessed for his minor injuries. Thompson was cited for DUI and was not jailed due to needing continued medical care. Assisting with the accident was Filley Fire and Beatrice Fire and Rescue.
