A Gage County resident from the Cortland area called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report he had received a telephone call from an unknown male stating he was from the Internal Revenue Service and the resident owed back taxes. The Gage County resident told the investigator he was aware of these type of calls being attempts to scam people out of money and he did not believe the Internal Revenue Service would call him instead of send him written notification.
The resident did not lose any money from this incident and he stated he hung up on the caller immediately. No personal or financial information was lost by the resident.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office cautions residents to be aware of scams and fraudulent activity that may come through telephone calls or the mail. Anyone with questionable incidents should not provide information to an unknown person and they are encouraged to contact the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and request to speak with an investigator.
