DATE & TIME: 08-02-2017 / 1930 hours
LOCATION: Rural Wymore, Nebraska
OFFENSE: Attempted Theft by Deception
CASE #: 2017-4287
A resident of rural Wymore states his wife received a telephone call in the evening hours of 08-02-2017 from someone claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The caller told the wife her social security number had been suspended and to call them back.
Approximately 15 minutes later the husband received a telephone call from the same number and the person calling stated they were from the IRS and also had the last four numbers of the husband’s social security number.
The resident recognized immediately both calls were fraudulent and contacted an investigator from the Gage County Sheriff’s Office on 08-03-2017 to report the calls. After confirming with the caller he had not given out any personal, financial, or other confidential information and had not suffered any financial loss, the investigator advised him to check his bank accounts for suspicious transactions, check his credit card accounts, and to monitor his mail for any possible fraudulent account that may have been opened using his personal information.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution when dealing with people on the telephone and to not give out personal, financial, or confidential information over the phone, unless they are 100% sure of who they are dealing with, such as a local bank or business they shop at regularly. If anyone believes they are the victim of a scam or fraud, they should immediately contact their local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
