LOCATION: Rural Blue Springs, Nebraska
OFFENSE: Attempted Theft By Deception / IRS Scam
CASE #: 2017-6340
A resident of rural Blue Springs called an investigator at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report he received phone calls from someone claiming to be with the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) stating his social security number had been suspended. He realized immediately this was a scam, but was concerned because the caller had a portion of his social security number.
The investigator confirmed with the caller he had not given out any personal, confidential, or personal information and had not lost any money. He was advised to check his bank and credit card accounts and to not call back to the number he had been told to. He stated he would contact his local social security office.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution and discretion when dealing with persons who attempt to engage them on the telephone, via mail, over the Internet, or in person, asking for or about personal information. Anyone who receives a suspicious contact can contact their local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
