Attempted Theft By Deception / Scam Phone Call

DATE & TIME: 01-23-2018 @ 1715

LOCATION: Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Attempted Theft By Deception / Scam Phone Call

CASE #: 2018-0313

Several Beatrice area realtors were contacted by telephone on the afternoon of Tuesday, 01-23-2018 by a male claiming to be a “Deputy Myerle” from the sheriff’s office. He stated they had failed to appear in court and a warrant was going to be issued for their arrest.

One of the realtors had sold a house to a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator, so she called him to inquire about “Deputy Myerle”. The investigator confirmed for her that there was no one by that name at the sheriff’s office and that the deputies on duty did not have names that sounded even remotely like that.  She informed the investigator that he had called from 402-223-5211, which her caller ID said was “County Offices”. She said another person called back from 402-205-7839 and identified himself as “Captain Vick” from the sheriff’s office and he was calling to verify the call of “Deputy Myerle”.  By this time, she was aware this was an attempt to defraud her and she did not comply with his demands.

Shortly thereafter, another Beatrice area realtor contacted the sheriff’s office and relayed a similar set of events, including the same telephone number. He was advised this was a scam and no one from the sheriff’s office had called him. The investigator contacted the first realtor and suggested she notify her network of realtors about the scam and to have them contact the investigator with questions. She stated she was already e-mailing her colleagues. The Beatrice Police Department was notified of the calls to the sheriff’s office.

Anyone who receives a suspicious telephone call, e-mail, letter, or contact should exercise caution and not provide any personal, financial, or confidential information to the caller and should immediately contact their local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
