Attempted Theft By Deception / Social Security Scam

DATE & TIME: 03-28-2018 @ 1429

LOCATION: Rural Beatrice

OFFENSE: Attempted Theft By Deception / Social Security Scam

CASE #: 2018-1322

A resident of rural Beatrice called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and spoke with an investigator, reporting she received two phone calls from 415-763-8376 and when she called the number back, a male with a Hispanic accent stated her social security number had been compromised and provided her with the last four digits of her social security number. She could not hear the male very well and stated it sounded like he was in a room with several people on the phone at the same time. She did not provide her social security number or other personal, confidential, or financial information and did not lose any money from this contact.

Calls of this type are referred to as “phishing”, wherein the caller attempts to elicit personal or confidential information from the victim. This information, such as date of birth, address, banking information, and marital status, can then be used to fraudulently obtain credit or charge accounts, as well as the potential for filing of false tax returns, if the entire social security number is revealed.

Anyone who receives telephone calls, e-mails, letters, or personal contact from people wanting to know personal, confidential, or financial information, should first seek the advice and guidance of a trusted family member or friend, or a professional financial adviser, such as a banker. The incident should also be reported to the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
