Criminal Impersonation (Identity Theft)

DATE & TIME: 02-25-2020 @ 15:15

LOCATION: Cortland, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Criminal Impersonation (Identity Theft)

CASE #: 2020-0949

A resident of Cortland contacted an investigator for the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to make a report for criminal impersonation, colloquially known as identity theft, involving fraudulent accounts opened at banks outside of Gage County. She had not suffered any financial loss, but was receiving requests for payment from the banks where the fraudulent accounts had been opened.

In speaking with the victim, she had already taken numerous steps to combat this, such as making a collateral report to the Federal Trade Commission, notifying the credit reporting agencies, and communicating with the banks asking for payment, informing them of the knavery by the unknown suspect. She was also working with the financial institutions on locating the fraud suspect, who was believed to be an unknown person outside of the state of Nebraska.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution in financial transactions, however there are times when personal, financial, or confidential information becomes available to mountebanks who use that information to commit identity theft. If you become a victim of identity theft, immediately contact your bank or other pecuniary fiduciary to protect your assets. A report should be made to local law enforcement to document the approximate date and circumstances of the identity theft.
