DATE & TIME: 05-22-2017 / 1515
LOCATION: Blue Springs, Nebraska
OFFENSE: Criminal Impersonation / Identity Theft
CASE #: 2017-2606
A resident of Blue Springs, Nebraska called the sheriff’s office to report an attempted phone scam. She states that on Monday, May 22, 2017, at approximately 3:00 pm, she received a telephone call on her cell phone from a telephone number with a 712 area code. She states the caller stated she was from the IRS, which she understood to mean the Internal Revenue Service, and advised her to call back immediately or the sheriff’s office would come down to pick her up.
The Blue Springs resident called the number back and was immediately transferred to a person who was familiar with her situation. She found this suspicious as she was expecting to be on hold for a long period of time and have to go through several touch tone options in order to speak with someone. The resident from Blue Springs spoke to a female with an accent similar to a person from the country of India. After only a few moments the resident hung up and called the sheriff’s office to report the scam.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office cautions citizens about what information they give out to unknown persons over the telephone, particularly in unsolicited calls or calls they are not 100% sure of who they are dealing with.
If anyone experiences this type of call, do not give out any information, hang up the telephone, and contact an investigator with the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to file a report for Identity Theft, which under Nebraska Revised Statutes is called Criminal Impersonation.
