Criminal Impersonation Rural Beatrice

DATE & TIME: 06-09-2017 / 1000

LOCATION: East Willow Road, Rural Gage County

OFFENSE: Criminal Impersonation (Identity Theft)

CASE #: 2017-3063

A rural Gage County resident reported she received a telephone call from someone claiming to be with the Social Security Administration.  The caller told her the Texas Rangers had recovered information relating to her social security number at a major crime scene.  The caller immediately became suspicious of the caller and, although he had the last four numbers of her social security number, he could not provide complete and accurate information on her.  She immediately hung up and called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.

Although the Gage County resident did not suffer any financial loss, this was a “phishing” attempt by the caller who would use the cover of being an official government representative to obtain personal or financial information from the victim to be used for either stealing money from the victim’s bank accounts or opening fraudulent credit accounts.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office recommends residents never give out personal or financial information over the telephone to unsolicited callers.  It is recommended callers not answer unknown calls and to not engage suspicious or unsolicited callers in conversation.

Further information on fraud, scams and identity theft can be found at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office website under the Public Awareness section.  The Gage County Sheriff’s Office website can be found at http://www.gagecountysheriff.us/ .
