Extortion

DATE & TIME: 09-23-2020 @ 14:14

LOCATION: Cortland

OFFENSE: Extortion

CASE #: 2020-4341

A resident of Cortland reports he received an e-mail stating his life was in danger and unless he paid $500.00 in bit coin, an unnamed assailant would throw acid in his face. The victim had received previous e-mails attempting to extort him to pay bit coin, but he had not paid attention to those and they were sent to his “spam” folder on his computer.

The subject did not make any payments and will be taking his computer to an electronics expert to have additional protective software placed on the device.

This is believed to be a “phishing” or spam type of e-mail and a response to the e-mail will only alert the malefactor that the email account the message was sent to is active and open up the possibility for further criminal activity.

Due to language used in the e-mail, it is believed the cozener threatening the victim does not live in the continental United States.
