False Reporting and Obstruction of Government Operations

DATE & TIME: 10-13-2016/ 2048 hours

LOCATION: Gage County Corrections Center, Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: False Reporting and Obstruction of Government Operations.

CASE #: 2016-5517

On Thursday, October 13, 2016 at approximately 2044 hours corrections officers from the Gage County Sheriff’s Office responded to a request for medical assistance from inmate Brady Murray.  Due to the unknown circumstances of the medical condition, Gage County Sheriff’s Office deputies and officers from the Beatrice Police Department were dispatched to assist and provide security for the Beatrice Fire Department ambulance crew that was dispatched.

The Beatrice Fire Department transported Brady Murray to Beatrice Community Hospital where he received a medical examination and treatment in the Emergency Department.  A Gage County Corrections Officer was assigned to guard the inmate and help provide security for the hospital staff while the inmate was at the hospital.  After being treated and released, the inmate was returned to the Gage County Corrections Center.

An investigator from the sheriff’s office reviewed jail video of the incident and interviewed witnesses to the incident.  The video does not show any medical emergency related to inmate Brady Murray.  Interviews of witnesses to the incident corroborate the video footage that there was no medical emergency at the time inmate Brady Murray caused emergency medical personnel to be dispatched.

According to witnesses, Brady Murray had received bad news earlier that day.  The witnesses state Brady Murray wanted to speak to a Corrections Officer, but was impatient when they did not immediately respond to him.  The witnesses state Brady Murray had been acting normally prior to the incident and had made statements that he knew how to get the corrections officers to come down to his cell.  Witnesses stated Brady Murray acted like he fell, striking the dinner table with his hands and then slinking down to the floor.

The corrections officers on duty checked on the inmate and when he would not respond, they requested an ambulance be dispatched.

The false reporting of this incident required the dispatch of emergency medical personnel, Gage County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and officers from the Beatrice Police Department, as well as the assignment of a corrections officer to guard Brady Murray while he was at Beatrice Community Hospital Emergency Department.

Upon completion of the investigation, the Gage County Sheriff’s Office has forwarded the reports to the Gage County Attorney’s Office for the filing charges of False Reporting and Obstruction of Government Operations against Brady Murray.

There was no emergency situation at the jail and after a brief security lock down, the staff returned the jail to normal correctional services operations. No inmates and no staff were injured during the incident.
