Fraud and Identity Theft

A resident of rural Beatrice came to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and reported to an investigator that earlier that day he had received a telephone call from 402-228-6074, with a name appearing on the phone caller ID. He said a male with a Hispanic accent told him he could reduce the interest rate on his credit card. The victim provided his credit card information to the suspect, however did not receive any type of confirmation of an interest rate reduction.

The victim realized he was scammed and reported the incident to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator, his bank, credit card company, and the social security administration. At the time of the report, it is unknown how much, if any amount, had been charged on his credit card or what other fraudulent accounts or identity theft activities have taken place.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator will work with the bank and credit card company regarding this case.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution when dealing with financial matters over the telephone, via e-mail, in person, or via mail. If dealing with a person or business you have not dealt with before or cannot 100% verify their identity, you should proceed with caution, contacting a family member or trusted friend, or reputable professional, such as a banker. Anyone who believes a scam or fraud has occurred should notify their local police department of call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
