OFFENSE: “Grandma Scam”
CASE #: 2020-1982
A resident of Beatrice contacted a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator to report she had received a phone call from 515-286-3772 and the male on the other end was very pleasant, using winsome, gladsome, and ingratiating comments trying to obtain information from her. He asked her, “Guess who this is Grandma?” and would follow-up with pleasant interrogatives to get her to reveal her name or deceive her into believing it was one of her grandchildren. The victim, however, was very aware of these types of scams and did not reveal any personal, financial, or confidential information to the suspect.
She alerted the sheriff’s office to make law enforcement aware of the attempted scam. She states she did not lose any money or provide any information that could be used by the suspect. Her report to the sheriff’s office was forwarded to the Beatrice Police Department for their records.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office would like to advise the public that this type of scam, as well as other types of fraud are being tried on residents of Gage County. Do not provide any personal, confidential, or financial information to unknown persons, whether on the phone, online, via mail, or in person. Contact the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
