Inheritance Scam

DATE & TIME: 07-10-2018 @ 0900

LOCATION: Cortland, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Inheritance Scam

CASE #: 2018-3484

A Cortland businessman and resident called the sheriff’s office to report he had received a letter in an envelope with no return address that indicated a person died without any relatives and the person writing the letter wanted to give the Cortland resident the $9.2 million in the deceased person’s account.

The Cortland resident/businessman knew right away it was a scam, by indicators such as no return address on the envelope, no business address on the letter, and the letter was addressed to someone else, not the person on the envelope. A Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator spoke with the Cortland resident, confirmed he had not lost any money, and took the letter for evidence.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be wary of the various scams, fraudulent activity, and other deceitful, duplicitous, and shams, chicanery and barratry. If you believe you have been targeted for a scam or fraud, contact your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
