LOCATION: Homestead National Monument Education Center

OFFENSE: Injury Accident

CASE #: 2019-4603

On Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at approximately 3:55 pm, the Gage County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle injury accident at the Homestead National Monument Education Center, off Highway 4, east of Southwest 89th Road. The responding deputy interviewed the driver, a witness and evaluated the crash evidence and determined that nineteen-year-old Raziel Kasilag of rural Beatrice was on his way home from Tri-County High School when his vehicle a 1989 Dodge pickup, drifted to the left, grazed the raised median, causing Kasilag to quickly over-correct to the right. He then drove off the highway, across a ditch and the corner of a field, then into a ravine, with his vehicle striking a tree and coming to a rest with the front of the vehicle off the ground and on the remaining tree stump. The accident was observed by a teacher from Tri-County Schools who was behind Kasilag and on her way home to Beatrice.

The Beatrice Rural Fire Department, Beatrice Fire Department, Beatrice Fire and Rescue, and the National Park Service assisted at the accident scene. Kasilag reported a minor injury to his left shoulder/chest area from where the seatbelt tightened, preventing him from flying out of the vehicle during the crash.  Alcohol and speed are not considered factors. The driver was properly wearing his safety belt.
