OFFENSE: IRS Scam Phone Call
CASE #: 2018-0859
A resident of Blue Springs, Nebraska notified a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator of a scam phone call she had received that day and the previous day. She states she received one phone call from a “restricted” number, but no message was left. The next day she received a telephone call from a “restricted” number, with an automated message to call back to 866-368-9099. When she called the number, the person who answered stated a “Mary Ann Robinson” from the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) was trying to collect money for delinquent taxes.
The caller realized she was not delinquent on her taxes and is aware the IRS does not call people to try to collect taxes. She did not provide any personal, financial, or confidential information to the caller and hung up.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges all residents to use caution when dealing with requests or demands for money made over the telephone, via mail, e-mail, or by personal contact. If in doubt to the authenticity of a request or demand, contact a family member, bank official, or other trusted person, call the local police department, or contact the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
