DATE & TIME: 04-06-2018 @ 1136

LOCATION: Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: IRS Scam Phone Call (Attempted Theft By Deception)

CASE #: 2018-1479

A resident of Beatrice, Nebraska contacted an investigator with the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report she had received a scam phone call from the telephone number 510-285-9078. The suspect identified himself as “Officer Richard Webber” from the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) and told her she would be in trouble if she or her attorney did not call him back. The Beatrice resident has previously received calls from people attempting to defraud her and she stated she was immediately aware this was a scam phone call.

The investigator confirmed with her she had not lost any money or given any personal, confidential, or financial information to the suspect. The Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator notified Beatrice Police Department investigators of the report for their case files.

The Internal Revenue Service does not call citizens to talk about their tax returns. The citizen who wishes to contact the Internal Revenue Service should look up the number in the phone book, find the official IRS website and obtain the telephone number there, or it will be on official IRS paperwork and correspondence. Anyone who receives a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, should not give out any personal, financial, or confidential information.  Report the phone call to the police department in the town where you live or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
