IRS Scam Phone Call

DATE & TIME: 04-24-2018 / 1741

LOCATION: Wymore, Nebraska

OFFENSE: IRS Scam Phone Call

CASE #: 2018-1815

A resident of Wymore, Nebraska called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and reported to an investigator he had received a telephone call from the phone number 800-298-9835 with a possibly automated voice stating it was the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) and they were going to come arrest him and knew where he was located. The investigator spoke with the victim and asked if the caller identified himself, which he does not believe he did, or if the suspect used the victim’s name or other identifying information, which he did not. The investigator advised the victim to not call the number back and to not provide any information to them.

Contacts of this type are referred to as “phishing”, which is where a random phone number is called and if the victim calls back, they are either scammed into sending money to avoid a fictional/non-existent fine, or personal, confidential, or financial information is obtained by the suspects, which is then used for further fraudulent acts.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to not provide any personal, confidential, or financial information to unknown persons, whether it is over the phone, via mail, in person, or through e-mail.  Anyone who believes they have received a scam phone call may contact their local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
