IRS Warrant Scam

DATE & TIME: 06-13-2019 @ 12:34

LOCATION: Rural Beatrice

OFFENSE: IRS Warrant Scam

CASE #: 2019-3052

A resident of rural Beatrice contacted a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator to inform him he had just received a scam phone call. The victim said he received a “robo” call, i.e. an automated voice message from the phone number 903-218-7059. The automated voice said something along the lines of, “Attention. This is the IRS. There have been back taxes owed in your name. Contact our office immediately or an arrest warrant will be issued.” The Beatrice resident was aware right away this was a scam and did not call back and does not believe the message mentioned his name. The investigator and resident believe his name was not used, as this allows the suspects to use one message for thousands of automated phone calls. The victim was advised to monitor his financial accounts at any rate, but based on the type of automated message, his finances are considered to be at low risk of loss or compromise from these suspects.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office asks residents to use caution when dealing with unsolicited calls, e-mails, letters or personal contacts. Do not give out personal, confidential, or financial information to persons not known to you personally.

If you receive this type of suspicious contact, you can notify your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator. If an investigator is unavailable, provide information to the dispatcher or a deputy sheriff that is on duty and the investigator will get back in touch with you for follow-up.
