Package Scam

DATE & TIME: 09-07-2018 @ 10:29 am

LOCATION: Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Package Scam

CASE #: 2018-4684

An elderly, but very cogent resident of Beatrice called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and notified the investigators about a person with a foreign accent calling her and trying to get her to do something to accept a package. When an investigator called her back there was no answer, so the investigator went to her residence. She was home and the investigator determined she had not suffered any monetary loss or given out any personal, financial, or confidential information.

She stated she did not know the person who called, he talked slowly, and had called with the phone numbers of 402-298-5160 and 876-252-9684. The investigator called those numbers and was transferred to a voicemail for “Number 191”, with no business name or personal name associated with the phone numbers.

The investigator advised her to contact her telephone service provider and at least have those numbers blocked. The investigator also cautioned her about other scams and to never hesitate to call law enforcement for assistance.

During the course of the investigation, other information was developed regarding suspicious activity in the neighborhood where she lives. This information was forwarded to the Beatrice Police Department.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to use caution when dealing with unknown persons on the telephone, via mail, in person, or over the Internet. Never give out personal, financial, or confidential information to unknown persons. Anyone who receives a suspicious communication or offer, should call their local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
