LOCATION: Wymore, Nebraska
OFFENSE: Phishing Scam
CASE #: 2021-0880
A resident of Wymore, Nebraska notified law enforcement she had received a phone call with an automated message stating she had been charged $499.00 and if she did not want to pay the charge, she should call back to (786) 687-5488. Several superfluous directions and options were given on the message, but the victim was aware of this type of “Phishing” scam, where the suspect gets the victim to call back and either obtains information for identity theft or has the victim make some type of payment for a fine, fee, or mulct. The victim and her husband did not suffer any financial loss in this scam.
The chief of police for the Wymore Police Department was notified and the case was turned over to that agency.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be cautious and aware of the potential for being scammed in a variety of ways. Warning signs are unsolicited contact/calls, demands for secrecy, the matter being “urgent”, being threatened with arrest if you do not follow their dictates, or requesting payment in a non-standard business manner, such as using “gift cards”.
Contact your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator if you need assistance.
