Phishing Scams Targeting Gage County Residents / Fraud

DATE & TIME: 10-09-2019 @ 11:00 am

LOCATION: Rural Beatrice & Holmesville

OFFENSE: Phishing Scams Targeting Gage County Residents / Fraud

CASE #: 2019-5349 / 2019-5198 / 2019-5337

REPEATED TARGETING OF GAGE COUNTY RESIDENTS

Three residents of rural Beatrice and Holmesville reported separate scams to a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator. All three victims had either previously reported fraud to the sheriff’s office or had suffered ongoing identity theft before finally calling the sheriff’s office. At the time of these reports, none of the victims had suffered any financial loss, but were apparently targeted repeatedly by con artists, grifters, and other mountebanks. All three were advised by the investigator to monitor their mail and financial accounts and to notify their banks and financial institutions of the attempted fraud so the banks could assist them with their accounts.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office warns the public to be aware there are ongoing attempts to scam, defraud, or blackmail residents. Do not provide any personal, financial or confidential information to the unknown persons via phone call, online, via mail, or in person. “Red Flags” that an interaction is potentially a scam is when you are threatened with arrest, immediate action is required, the suspect advises to keep the contact “private”, or they want payment through non-traditional methods, such as going out to purchase gift cards and providing them with the redemption information. Other indicators would be if they require a payment or fee to collect prizes, if the deal is too good, such as sending more money than the item is worth, or asking you to provide personal, financial, or confidential information so they can “verify” your account.

Do not provide any information and do not succumb to threats, demands, or tricks. Hang up, discontinue the conversation, and contact a relative, close friend, or trusted financial advisor such as a banker or accountant. If you believe you are a victim of identity theft or fraud, contact your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
