A resident of Liberty, Nebraska contacted the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and reported to an investigator that she had received a phone call from a phone with the area code of 217 where the caller rambled on something about money being owed and money being transferred out of her checking account.

The resident of Liberty regularly reads news releases from the sheriff’s office about scams and frauds, so she did not provide any personal, financial, or confidential information to the suspect.  She has not lost any money, however the investigator recommended she contact her bank to have their fraud department assist her in keeping her accounts secure.

Sheriff Gustafson and the Gage County Sheriff’s’ Office urges residents to be wary and cognizant of the possibility of frauds, scams, and theft by deception.  Warning signs are requests for money, demands for secrecy, the situation being too good to be true, requesting money for winning some prize, and requesting payment through gift cards.
