Phone Scam

DATE & TIME: 03-09-2021 @ 10:10 am

LOCATION: Cortland, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Phone Scam

CASE #: 2021-0849

A resident of rural Cortland reported to a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator that she had received a phone call with an automated message around 10:10 am on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 with the suspects threatening to have her arrested regarding “fraudulent activity” that had occurred using her identity.  The message went on to state her social security number and benefits would be suspended unless she called back to 775-464-0374 today.  The suspects used other classic scam techniques, such as trying to embarrass the victim by saying the media and law enforcement would be notified of the warrant.

The victim, however, was aware of these type of scam calls and did not return the suspect’s phone call and did not lose any money.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be aware of the potential for fraud and scams in any transaction and to not fall victim to threats, coercion, demands for secrecy or urgency, or any other method that is unethical.

It is recommended you not contact or interact with suspects.  Contact your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
