CASE #: 2018-1297
A resident of Virginia, Nebraska reported to Gage County Sheriff’s Office deputies and investigators she had received several text messages from 386-270-0181. The messages started with “Have you heard the good news?”, then stated the person sending the text message had just received $90,000.00. An investigator with the Gage County Sheriff’s Office followed up and verified the victim did not provide any financial or banking information to the suspects and did not lose any money. She was advised to make her financial institutions aware so they could monitor her accounts for possible fraud. She was also advised to check her mail and verify no one had opened a credit card or other charge account in her name.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to not provide any personal, confidential, or financial information over the phone, via text message, mail, or in person, unless they are 100 percent confident in the reliability of the person they are giving the information to. Residents should contact a family member, trusted financial representative, such as a banker, or call their local police department or they can call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
