Publisher’s Clearinghouse Scam

DATE & TIME: 05-10-2019 @ 11:11 am

LOCATION: Rural Liberty, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Publisher’s Clearinghouse Scam

CASE #: 2019-2391

A resident of rural Liberty, Nebraska notified a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator that she had received a scam phone call around 11:00 am on Friday, May 10, 2019.  She said her caller ID identified the phone number of the caller as “Unavailable”, but she answered the phone and a male with a heavy foreign accent told her his name was “John Baker” and she had won 2 million dollars and a Mercedes in the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. The suspect then asked her for her name. She immediately realized this was a scam because she had not entered the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes, the company does not call before presenting the prize, and the suspect did not have her name. The suspect told her to call him back at 876-875-3933 or 630-360-3733. She did not provide the suspect with any personal, financial, or confidential information and did not lose any money from this scam.

Anyone who receives unsolicited phone calls, e-mails, letters, or personal contact from anyone wanting personal information or promising rewards, or threatening arrest/prosecution, should not provide any information and contact their local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
