Scam Phone Call / IRS

DATE & TIME: 11-28-2017@9:30 am

LOCATION: Wymore, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Scam Phone Call / IRS

CASE #: 2017-6526

A resident of Wymore alerted an investigator at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office that he had received a telephone call from someone claiming to be “Officer Ryan Smith” from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) claiming his income tax return contained fraud and telling him to call back.  The resident states he received two telephone calls from the same number, which had the area code of 646.  He recognized right away this was not a phone call from the IRS, because that agency has agents, not officers, and they would not call him, they would send him a letter.

The investigator confirmed the resident had not lost any money or given out any personal, confidential, or financial information.  He was advised to check on his financial accounts and to contact the sheriff’s office if he does discover any loss.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be wary of situations and contacts where a person is demanding payment or they are contacted by phone, in person, via mail, or over the Internet and there is a request for money.  Anyone who receives a suspicious request or contact can call their local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
