A resident from Virginia, Nebraska notified a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator she had received a phone call where the person left a message stating they were from the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) and they were filing a lawsuit against her and would have an arrest warrant if she did not call them back.

The investigator confirmed with the resident that she did not lose any money and did not disclose any personal, financial, or confidential information.  She was advised to monitor her banking and credit card accounts, as well as her mail, but since the person calling did not mention any identifying information about her, the phone call was believed to be based on a random phone number generator.

Residents who receive any suspicious phone call, mail, e-mail, or personal contact should contact their local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.  The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution and good judgment when dealing with an unknown person or business and to not disclose any personal, financial, or confidential information to these people.
