Selective Traffic Enforcement Cortland Area

DATE & TIME: 06-21-2017

LOCATION: Highway 77 / Cortland Area

OFFENSE: Selective Traffic Enforcement in Cortland, June 26-July 10, 2017

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a grant from the Nebraska Department of Roads Highway Safety Administration to conduct selective traffic enforcement on Highway 77 in the Cortland area from June 26-July 10, 2017.  The purpose of the grant is to reduce accidents, educate the driving public, and provide safer roads and highways through enforcement of traffic laws in the area.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office will have deputies working overtime during this enforcement period and dedicated to the enforcement of the speed limit and other traffic laws on Highway 77 in and around Cortland.  The deputies assigned to this enforcement effort will focus solely on traffic enforcement during this time, freeing deputies on regular duty shifts to respond to calls for service and other assignments.

The speed limit on Highway 77 north and south of Cortland is 65 miles per hour, however the speed limit drops to 45 miles per hour as Highway 77 passes through Cortland.  Deputies who reside in the area received numerous complaints from residents about vehicles not obeying the speed limit as they drive through town.  The deputies forwarded the concerns of the residents and the village council to Sheriff Gustafson, who authorized a deputy to contact the Nebraska Department of Roads Highway Safety Administration to request a grant to respond to the complaints.

This grant from the Nebraska Department of Roads Highway Safety Administration reimburses the Gage County Sheriff’s Office for the overtime salaries of deputies participating in the enforcement effort.  There will not be any increase to the sheriff’s office budget to pay for this grant as the salaries of the deputies will be reimbursed.
