DATE & TIME: From June 26th through July 10th 2017
LOCATION: Cortland/Highway 77
OFFENSE: Selective Traffic Enforcement
In response to complaints from citizens regarding vehicles speeding through town, the Sheriff’s Office responded by assigning deputies from the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to a selective enforcement operation on Highway 77 in the Village of Cortland. The deputies, working off duty on a grant from the Nebraska Department of Roads Highway Safety Administration, worked various shifts throughout a two week enforcement period.
On various days throughout the selective traffic enforcement period, deputies dedicated 18 hours of traffic enforcement, resulting in 91 traffic stops of vehicles speeding through town. Deputies checked each driver for warrants and driving status and took appropriate enforcement action, issuing citations, written warnings, or equipment repair citations, or arresting the driver. Traffic stops during this period resulted in various other offenses as well, from a felony warrant arrest to driving under suspension.
The genesis of this selective enforcement were complaints about vehicles not slowing down for the reduced speed limit in town forwarded to a deputy who resides in the area. The deputy spoke with village board members regarding the complaints he had received and the village board also had received numerous complaints. The deputy relayed this information to Sheriff Gustafson, who authorized the application to the Nebraska Department of Roads Highway Safety Administration for a selective traffic enforcement grant.
