Social Security Deputy Scam

DATE & TIME: 04-29-2019 @10:25 am

LOCATION: Rural Gage County

OFFENSE: Social Security Deputy Scam

CASE #:  2019-2019-2169

A resident of rural Plymouth, Nebraska, while working in Gage County, received a scam phone call from 929-214-1385. The victim did not answer the call because he did not recognize the number, but when he checked his voicemail, the suspect had left an automated message stating a “Social Security Deputy” was awaiting his return call about a warrant being issued for his arrest. The victim, who has friends and associates with the Nebraska State Patrol and the Gage County Sheriff’s Office, recognized this was a scam and did not call the suspect. He did not suffer any monetary loss and the suspect did not use his name or other identifying information.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution when dealing with unknown persons via telephone, online, through the mail, or in person. Some “red flags” indicating fraudulent activity include, but are not limited to:

  1. The other person wants you to provide your personal or confidential information.
  2. There is a demand for secrecy or urgency in complying with their request.
  3. Payment is requested via non-traditional methods, such as purchasing gift cards and providing the suspect with the information to cash the cards.
  4. There are veiled or direct threats of arrest or a warrant being issued.
  5. A down payment or fee is required to collect some award they are giving out.
  6. The contact is regarding a family member who has an emergency, but needs money to get out of trouble (and secrecy is asked).

If you have this type of contact, do not give out any personal, financial, or confidential information.  Contact your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
