Social Security Scam

DATE & TIME: 07-18-2019 @ 12:00 pm

LOCATION: Rural Beatrice

OFFENSE: Social Security Scam

CASE #: 2019-3788

A resident of rural Beatrice received a telephone call from a male with a Hispanic/Mexican accent around noon on July 18th, 2019. The suspect asked for the victim by name, obtained some minimal information, then told him there was a warrant for his arrest out of the state of Texas and needed his social security number in order to “clear up” the matter. The victim refused to give his social security number and was threatened by the suspect, stating they were going to stop his social security payments unless he gave his social security number to him. At this time, the victim realized this was a scam, likely because he realized the threat of stopping his social security payments was empty, because they would not be able to stop payments on an account they did not have. He told the suspect to give him his address and he would have his attorney contact him. The suspect then hung up. He did not lose any money in this incident.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be wary of contacts, whether via phone/text, mail, e-mail/online, or in person, where the person wants to obtain your personal, financial, or confidential information. Providing this information can lead to fiduciary loss, credit fraud, or identity theft. If you have any questions about an incident where you were contacted, call the local police department or the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
