Social Security Scam

Sheriff Gustafson has received several reports and the Gage County Sheriff’s has received additional reports of residents receiving telephone calls from suspects stating or implying they are with the Social Security Administration or law enforcement and the person’s social security number has been compromised, resulting in either suspension of the social security number/benefits, or threatening arrest of the person if they do not call back.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office wants the public to be aware of this scam and that the social security administration will not call you regarding your social security number, rather they will send official documentation through the U.S. mail. If you receive a call from someone threatening to arrest you or stating you have a warrant, do not communicate with them. Hang up and call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office via Southeast Communications to report the scam, at 402-223-4080.

The suspects will attempt to either gather personal, financial, or confidential information to commit identity theft or steal from your accounts or state the problem can go away if you pay a certain amount of money in a type of mulct to remove the warrant for your arrest.

Do not provide any personal, financial, or confidential information to unknown persons via the telephone, online, in person, or through the mail. Contact the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
