Social Security Scam

DATE & TIME: 12-20-2019 @ 14:02

LOCATION: Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Social Security Scam

CASE #: 2019-6615

A resident of Beatrice called an investigator at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report a scam phone call she had received on December 20th, 2019. She received a “robo call” from 512-772-1808 telling her some fraud was associated with her social security number and to press “1” to speak with an officer. She immediately knew it was a scam because the social security administration does not call people and she had read about these types of scam calls that had been reported to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office. She hung up and did not provide any information to the suspects.

The information for this case was forwarded to the Beatrice Police Department for their records/files.

There are endless ways to fall victim to a scam, but there are also very simple ways to protect yourself:  Do not provide personal, confidential, or financial information to unknown persons, whether on the phone, in person, via mail, or on the Internet. Do not succumb to threats or demands for secrecy or silence. Take the time to speak with a family member, trusted friend, or professional (such as your banker or accountant), or call the local police department or contact the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator to confirm whether or not it is likely a scam.
