OFFENSE: Stolen Vehicle Discovered During Title Inspection

CASE #: 2018-2285

A resident from Holmesville, Nebraska purchased a 1998 construction truck through "Purple Wave" online auction. He states he purchased the truck on 04-19-2018 for $8,300.00 plus $830.00 fee, for a total of $9,130.00, obtained a Missouri Department of Revenue Bill of Sale or Even-Trade Bill of Sale, and received the State of Missouri Certificate of Title in the mail on 05-18-2018.

Since the vehicle had been purchased outside of Nebraska, the law requires a vehicle title inspection be completed at the sheriff’s office prior to a title being issued. He came to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to have a vehicle title inspection completed, however when the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) was checked, the VIN number came up as the vehicle having been stolen. A Gage County investigator was assigned to the case who confirmed with a detective from the Henry County Sheriff's Office in Clinton, Missouri, that the vehicle had been stolen from a construction site from that county in October 2016.

The vehicle was impounded and the Gage County Sheriff's Office will assist the Henry County Sheriff's Office with any follow-up investigation. The Holmesville resident is not a suspect in the theft and he stated he understood he would have to seek a civil redress of grievance to recover his money from Purple Wave or obtain a clear title to the vehicle.
