A Beatrice resident came to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report that he had been conducting online business when a link popped up on his laptop computer stating he had a virus. He clicked on the link and eventually was billed for fictitious computer repair costing $2,500.00. The resident states his credit card company has negated the charges and he is not out any money.
The resident was directed to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office website at http://www.gagecountysheriff.us/ and advised to go to the Public Awareness section, open the “Fraud/ Identity Theft / Scams” portion and click on the link to the Federal Trade Commission for further reporting options and assistance.
The Beatrice Police Department was informed of the report to the sheriff’s office.
