A resident of Beatrice contacted a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator to inform him he had received several phone calls in the past week, at least two from unknown numbers saying they were with the Department of Treasury, as well as a text message about a government lawsuit. He also received a telephone call from 210-981-3834 and an automated voice said his social security number was associated with criminal activity and he was to call back 210-981-3835.

He spoke with his accountant, who advised him it was a scam, but he wanted to notify law enforcement, because he is a business owner and has a government issued employer ID number.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office cautions residents to not provide any personal, confidential, or financial persons. Always confirm the authenticity of the caller, speak with a family member, trusted friend, or professional financial adviser such as a banker or accountant, contact the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
