OFFENSE: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm at a School
CASE #: 2017-6021
On Thursday, 11-02-2017, at approximately 9:10 am, Freeman High School administrators called Southeast Communications and requested a deputy respond to the high school regarding a student who had brought a shotgun to school. The student had left the shotgun in his vehicle, which was parked in the school parking lot.
The deputy responding to the scene met the principal in the parking lot and secured the .12 gauge pump action shotgun, along with several shotgun shells, from the student’s vehicle. The deputy then began an investigation, the results of which resulted in the student being detained by law enforcement and suspended by the school. The student, a juvenile male, will have a court date set by the court.
There is no evidence or belief the student brought the firearm to school with any intent on using it at school or against any student, staff, or faculty. He claims he had been out hunting and simply forgot the shotgun was in his passenger seat.
Freeman High School has regular and frequent communication with Gage County Sheriff’s Office deputies and investigators regarding all school safety matters. The student who brought the shotgun to school has been previously identified and there is no evidence indicating he had planned any type of violent act at school.
