“Your Account Has Been Hacked” Scam

OFFENSE: “Your Account Has Been Hacked” Scam

CASE #: 2018-4272

A Beatrice resident contacted a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator to report she had received a telephone call and was told “Your account has been hacked. Don’t make any transactions. Push ‘1’ for Apple Support.” She recognized right away this was an attempt to scam her, by agreeing to some unsolicited type of computer service or by providing money or financial/credit account information. She states she did not provide any information and did not lose any money.

There are numerous types of scams and frauds. They may come over the telephone, in person via a sales person or solicitor, through the mail, or online. Be wary when dealing with these type of situations; do not give out personal, financial, or confidential information, do not send any money, make payments via credit card, and especially not when asked to wire money or make payments via gift cards of some type. 

If you are in this type of situation, you may contact your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
