Check Scam

DATE & TIME: 06-12-2023 / 1:44 pm

LOCATION: Rural Wymore, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Check Scam

CASE #: 2023-2807

A resident of rural Wymore called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, June 12th, 2023 and spoke with an investigator, reporting that she had received a check for $745.00 in the mail from a person in South Carolina, however she did not know the person who wrote the check or the person he was referring to in a handwritten note included in the letter.

The victim checked with her bank and was informed the check was not legitimate, so she called the sheriff’s office to report the incident.

She did not lose any money and did not disclose any personal, confidential, or financial information to the suspect.  She was advised to contact her bank and monitor her financial accounts for suspicious activity.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution when dealing in financial matters with unknown persons as any contact could lead to an unintended fraud or loss of funds based on information they obtain from the contact.

If you have a suspicious contact, via mail, e-mail, phone, or in person, use caution, call a trusted person or financial advisor, such as a banker or accountant, and do not succumb to pressure or threats.  Call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office via Southeast Communications at 402-223-4080 if you need to speak with a deputy or an investigator.
