Craig’s List / Fake Check Scam

DATE & TIME: 11-02-2018 @ 09:51

LOCATION: Rural Beatrice

OFFENSE: Craig’s List / Fake Check Scam

CASE #: 2018-5530

A resident of rural Beatrice contacted a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator to inform him that they had received a fraudulent check from a subject who was trying to purchase an item they had for sale on Craig’s List. The suspect sent a fake check for $2,700.00 to pay for an item worth $1,000.00, and then made statements to the victim that he was going to get his attorney involved. The Beatrice resident did not lose any money and still has possession of the item being sold on Craig’s List. She also stated they did not give out any personal, credit, or financial information to the suspect, however she was advised to monitor her mail since the suspect had their name and address.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution when making online transactions or dealing with persons they do not personally know. If you believe you are the victim of a fraud or scam, call the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
