LOCATION: Clatonia, Nebraska

OFFENSE: E-Mail Scam

CASE #: 2019-4037

A Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator was notified by an office manager for a business in Clatonia concerned that her company’s information system might be under cyber-attack. She stated an e-mail from an unknown source was inadvertently opened and the e-mail was soliciting assistance in removing $2.6 million dollars back to America and was electronically signed, “SGT Dave Alejandro”. She did not respond to the e-mail and has not noticed any peculiarities with the computer or financial aspects of the company.

The investigator advised her to not respond to the e-mail, which came from an e-mail address with the Internet country code domain ending in “cl”, which is assigned to Internet domains in Chile. She was also advised to contact a reputable local Internet or computer company to have the company’s computer system checked for viruses. He also advised her to alert the financial institutions the company uses, so they could assist in protecting the company’s assets and computer system.
