Fraud / IRS Scam Wymore

DATE & TIME: 08-29-2017 / 1630

LOCATION: Wymore, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Fraud / IRS Scam

CASE #: 2017-4877

A Wymore resident came to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report that on Tuesday, 08-29-2017 at approximately 2:08 pm he received a telephone call and recorded message from a person stating they were with the IRS and he needed to call them back regarding his taxes or an arrest warrant would be issued for him. He immediately recognized this as a fraudulent/scam phone call and he reported the incident to an investigator at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.

After confirming the caller did not have his name, social security number, bank account information or address, the investigator advised him to continue to monitor his bank accounts and check his mail for any fraudulently opened credit cards or purchases made in his name. The Wymore resident was also concerned his mother may fall victim to this type of scam and he wanted to have the incident documented.  It appears as if the Wymore resident received the telephone call at random and the suspect or suspects did not have any personal information on him or his family.

The investigator for the Gage County Sheriff’s Office notified the Wymore Police Department and the Wymore chief of police of the report being made.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution when dealing with anyone who calls stating they are in trouble, or a family member is in trouble, or requesting money or any type of personal or confidential information, such as social security number, bank account or credit card number. Citizens should immediately call their local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator if they receive any suspicious or questionable calls.
