Grandma Scam

DATE & TIME: 04-13-2021 @ 10:40 am

LOCATION: Blue Springs, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Grandma Scam

CASE #: 2021-1412

A resident of Blue Springs, Nebraska received a phone call from 877-422-5185 at approximately 10:40 am on 04-13-2021. When she answered the suspect said, “Grandma?”, and engaged her in conversation, telling he was her grandson. He said he was involved in an accident and was in jail in Kansas because the other person had been taken to the hospital.

She did not recognize his voice, so she asked about a family member and the suspect became perplexed and said he had to hang up. Later, while she was on the phone with her real grandson, she received another phone call from a different phone number and this suspect told her he was her (fake) grandson’s attorney. She advised the suspect/s she was aware it was a scam and the call was disconnected.

She did not suffer any financial loss and did not disclose any personal or confidential information.

If you receive a phone call or other contact from someone, be completely sure who you are talking to and do not succumb to demands or requests for secrecy, privacy, or urgency.  Disconnect or remove yourself from the conversation and seek advice from a family member, a trusted friend, or a professional such as a banker or accountant. If you believe you have been targeted for a scam, contact the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
