Mail Fraud / Scam

DATE & TIME: 09-12-2017 / 1200

LOCATION: Rural Liberty, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Mail Fraud / Scam

CASE #: 2017-5110

DETAILS: A resident of rural Liberty, Nebraska called an investigator with the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report he had received a letter in the mail, purportedly from a representative of Canada Trust Bank, stating he was due to inherit $9,200,000.00, which his brother had placed in a bank account. The letter stated his brother had placed the money in a bank in London, United Kingdom, prior to passing away and the victim needed to e-mail the bank representative to claim the money.

The resident immediately recognized this as an attempt to defraud him and he did not contact the representative. The resident did not lose any money from this scam.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution in financial matters outside the normal routine of business. There are many ways to become a victim; through the mail, via the internet, over the telephone, or even through personal contact, such as door-to-door salesmen.  Any information provided to unverified sources can be used to obtain access to your financial or credit accounts, gain personal or confidential information, thereby allowing the suspects to open credit accounts in your name or make purchases, usually online, with your personal data.

Anyone who believes they are being contacted as part of a scam or fraud can call their local police department or contact the Gage County Sheriff’s Office at 402-223-5222 and ask to speak with an investigator.

Do not make any rush or hurried decisions or make a decision based on pressure from someone you do not know or cannot verify their credibility.
