Phone Scam

DATE & TIME:  06-30-2020 @ 8:29 am

LOCATION:  Filley, Nebraska

OFFENSE:  Phone Scam

CASE #:  2020-2919

A resident of Filley, Nebraska was contacted by phone on Monday, June 29,2020 by someone claiming to be from his satellite television service provider. The suspect stated he was going to update the receivers on his television and “transferred” him to another suspect who was able to obtain some minimal personal identifying information from the victim. He was then transferred to another suspect who stated he would have to pay $140.00 or lose his satellite television service.  By now, the victim realized it was a scam and discontinued speaking with the suspects.

On Tuesday, June 30, 2020 the victim called an investigator at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.  After confirming there currently was no monetary loss, the victim was advised to call the satellite television provider and check on his account. He was also advised to alert his bank and to monitor his mail over the course of the next few months, in case the suspects used the information they had obtained to commit identity theft.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be wary of unsolicited phone calls, e-mails, letters/correspondence, or personal contact via any means. Do not provide personal or financial information to persons or entities you cannot completely confirm are legitimate. If you receive this type of contact, do not engage in communication with the suspects. Contact the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator to assist you.
