LOCATION: Wymore, Nebraska
OFFENSE: Scam Phone Call / Impersonating Federal Officers
CASE #: 2018-0777
A resident of Wymore, Nebraska contacted a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator and reported he had received a telephone call from 206-231-0001 with an automated voice stating “the government” had been trying to contact him for six months and they were going to have a warrant for his arrest issued. He states he realized it was a scam phone call and did not call the number back or provide any personal, confidential or financial information to the suspects.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be wary of phone calls, e-mails, letters, or persons requesting or demanding payment. Residents should also be wary of situations where the other person is encouraging secrecy, or wanting to remain confidential in the collection of money. Another warning sign of fraud is demanding payment in non-traditional business methods, such as purchasing gift cards and giving the gift card information for payment, or paying a third person and not a directly billed debt from a legitimate business.
Anyone who receives a suspicious demand for money should not provide payment until they have spoken with a trusted family member, a local banker, or a legitimate financial consultant. If you have received a phone call you believe is a fraud, contact your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
