A Wymore resident called an investigator from the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report she received two telephone calls from someone claiming to be from the US Treasury Department and threatening her with arrest and prosecution. She realized the US Treasury Department would not call and threaten prosecution and especially since she had not received any mail or correspondence from the federal government.

The investigator confirmed with her she had not lost any money and had not given out any personal, confidential, or financial information. She was advised to monitor her bank and credit accounts for any suspicious activity, but since the caller had not used her name or any identifying information about her, it is believed she had received a random phone call from suspects attempting to defraud her.

The Wymore Police Department was advised of the report to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office for their records.

Anyone who receives a phone call, e-mail, personal contact, or mail they deem suspicious they should contact their local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator. Residents are urged to use caution and exercise discretion in revealing personal, confidential, or financial information to unknown persons.
