Scam Phone Call

DATE & TIME: 11-07-2017 @ 0900

LOCATION: Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Scam Phone Call

CASE #: 2017-6144

A Beatrice resident called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report to an investigator he had received a telephone call from a phone number with a 919 area code. The caller left a message stating a criminal lawsuit had been filed against him, gave him a case number, and told him to call the number back immediately.

The resident, realizing this was an attempt to scam him out of money, did not call the person back, instead calling the sheriff’s office and advising an investigator of the call. The investigator confirmed with him that he was not out any money and had not given out any personal, confidential, or financial information to the caller.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator advised investigators with the Beatrice Police Department of the report.

Residents are urged to use caution when dealing when receiving unsolicited telephone calls demanding money, immediate payment, or secrecy in transactions. Any time a business requests payment outside of normal business practices, such as paying with gift cards, via Western Union, or any other variation is probably not a legitimate offer. Any type of suspicious transaction; by phone, online, through the mail, or in person, should be reported to the local police department or contact the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and request to speak with an investigator.
