Social Security Scam

DATE & TIME: 12-03-2018 @ 10:30 am

LOCATION: Wymore, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Social Security Scam

CASE #: 2018-6035

A resident of Wymore, Nebraska called a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator to report she had received a telephone call at about 10:30 am on 12-03-2018 from the phone number 210-880-4760.  When she called back a male with a Jamaican accent identified himself as being with the Social Security Administration and that there had been some type of fraudulent activity with her social security number.  He used her name and wanted her to verify the last four numbers of her social security number.

Realizing it was a scam, she hung up and called the real Social Security Administration to report the scam, however after waiting on hold for 45 minutes with that agency, she hung up and called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office. She did not provide the suspect the last four numbers of her social security administration, or any personal, financial, or confidential information, but she wanted to report the scam phone call.

She was advised to contact her financial institution to alert them to the possibility she might be targeted for fraud and the investigator also advised her to monitor her mail for fraudulent accounts that might have been opened in her name. The Wymore Police Department was advised of the report to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.

The Social Security Administration will not call card holders to verify any information. That administration will already have the entire social security number and will not need to verify the last four numbers of a social security number.

Do not provide any personal, financial, or confidential information to unknown persons over the telephone. If you believe you are being scammed, hang up, notify the local police department, or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
